A group of Irvine Valley College’s Laser and Photonics Technology students were invited to tour the Alcon manufacturing facility in Irvine recently. During the all-day event, the students and assistant professor Desiré Whitmore interacted with alumni from the program and learned about what they do in their day-to-day duties. Students learned about Alcon’s laser eye surgery product offerings and how the instruments are assembled and tested. They were able to see first-hand all of the hardware, optics, optomechanics, photonics, and electronics that go into creating these machines. They also had the opportunity to ask the engineers and technicians direct questions about their work. The tour was arranged and led by IVC Photonics alumni, Jeremy Parkinson and his colleague, Miguel Moldonado.
